Important: USPS Postmark Date Rules Have Changed
Since December 24, 2025, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has a new rule that could affect any legal or filing deadlines based on the
postmark date.
The USPS now considers the postmark date to be
“the date a piece of mail goes through its first automated processing at a USPS facility.”
This is not always the same day you drop off the mail. The postmark date may be different from:
- The day you take the mail to the post office.
- The date shown when a clerk accepts it at the counter.
- The date printed on postage labels or a meter.
For example, if you mail something on Monday but it isn’t processed until Tuesday, the postmark will show Tuesday’s date. Because USPS is now routing mail through regional hubs instead of local centers, these delays could happen more often.
To make sure your mail shows the date you actually sent it, USPS suggests:
- Ask for a hand-stamped postmark at the post office counter when you drop off your mail.
- Buy postage at the counter, where the printed label will include the acceptance date.
- Use services with proof of mailing, like a Certificate of Mailing, Registered Mail, or Certified Mail, to get a dated receipt.

U.S. Postal Service (USPS) rule,
which highlights potential impacts on any statute or regulatory filing deadlines that rely on a postmark date to determine timeliness.
