Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT)

Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) was created from Laura’s Law, passed by state legislature in 2002. AOT provides community-based support and court oversight of mandatory outpatient treatment by a civil, not a criminal, court. AOT is dedicated specifically to adults with severe mental illness, most commonly persons served living with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, who may have difficulty engaging in mental health treatment. Family, friends, and other specific individuals who meet certain criteria may submit referrals on their loved one’s behalf. 

• Referrals to AOT will be processed through Fresno County DBH and AOT program services will be provided by MHS TURN DART West.

  • The completed referral form should be emailed to the AOT mailbox: DBHAOT@fresnocountyca.gov where it will be reviewed by Fresno County Department of Behavioral Health staff for specific criterion (criterion are outlined in the AOT referral form below) to establish clinical appropriateness for AOT services.
