Health Equity
The Fresno County Department of Public Health (FCDPH) understands the importance of health equity and ensuring that Fresno County residents have every opportunity to attain their highest level of health. FCDPH health equity approach includes assessment of the current landscape, capacity building of staff and community partners, and planning for health equity internal objectives, goals and initiatives through collaboration and consensus-building efforts.

Health Equity Definition
Health equity means that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to achieve optimal health. This requires identifying and removing obstacles to health such as:
- Poverty
- Inequity
- Powerlessness
- Lack of access to good jobs with fair pay
- Quality Education
- Housing
- Safe Environments
- Healthcare

Social Determinants of Health Definition
Healthy People 2030 defines social determinant of health (SDOH) as the conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play worship, and age that affect a wide range of health functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks.

Health Equity Committee
The Fresno County Department of Public Health - Health Equity Committee (the Committee) is an internal workgroup of staff members from various Divisions within the department. The Committee's primary focus is to identify and eliminate disparities in health outcomes that arise from social, economic, and environmental factors in Fresno County through the promoting, adapting and implementing best practices to advance health equity in Fresno County. The Committee aims to create a workplace culture where health equity is a priority with the purpose of enhancing delivery of services to residents of Fresno County.
Regional Collaboration
FCDPH’s Health Equity team collaborates with the Central California Public Health Consortium (CCPHC) and health equity programming from various regional Local Health Jurisdictions (LHJs) in Merced, Madera, Kings, Tulare, and Kern Counties. The intention of these collaboration opportunities is to gain alignment of health equity efforts at the state, regional and local levels and share feedback and best practices for health departments to achieve health equity.
