The Public Health Laboratory provides surveillance and detects the presence of disease producing agents which have the potential to adversely affect the health of an entire community, in other words, while individual conditions are treated, the primary objective is to protect the entire community much like the mission of the Fire or Sheriff's Departments. The Public Health Laboratory accomplishes this mission by accepting and testing specimens in support of both human and environmental for examination to detect organisms that may threaten the health of the community. The information generated by this testing is furnished to other agencies and departments to be used for the purpose of monitoring infectious disease outbreaks and environmental threats to the public's health. The information can then be used to plan containment strategies and also assess the effectiveness of various health education programs.
