CDC - MWF - My Water's Fluoride Home
Fluoride is a strong mineral. It is found in water, certain foods, and added to toothpaste and mouthwash to prevent cavities.
Yes, fluoride is safe and healthy for teeth when used correctly. Doctors and dentists recommend fluoride as one of the best ways to prevent tooth decay. Using fluoridated toothpaste two times a day and brushing for two minutes will help keep your teeth strong.
At home, you can brush with fluoride toothpaste or rinse with fluoride mouthwash. When visiting the dentist, a dental professional can paint a fluoride varnish on the teeth to make them stronger. It is a quick and painless treatment to help prevent cavities. At your next dental check-up, ask your dentist if you are a candidate for fluoride varnish.
Medi-Cal covers fluoride varnish once a year for adults. Children and teens under 21 can often receive two applications per year.
For other insurance plans, please contact them directly to check your dental coverages.
Children can start using fluoride toothpaste as soon as their first teeth grow in. For children under 3 years, use a smear of toothpaste the size of a grain of rice. For children 3 and over, use a small pea sized amount.
